EDWARD TURNER KASPBRAK was born on november 2, 1975 in bangor, maine to frank and sonia kaspbrak. he was born five weeks premature, partially due to his mother’s weight and age, and as a result, has been petite his entire life. he was not allowed to go home for nearly four weeks. once the doctors determined he was able to survive outside of a hospital, frank and sonia took him home.THE FIRST FIVE years of eddie’s life were fairly uneventful. he started talking early (10 months), but started walking late (18 months). by three, the only toys he wanted to play with were matchbox cars.WHEN HE WAS four years old, frank was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. he lived until shortly after eddie’s fifth birthday, then died in the same bangor hospital eddie was born in on february 14, 1981.SONIA DID NOT take frank’s death well.TWO MONTHS LATER, on april 29, 1981, sonia and eddie moved to derry, maine so sonia could be closer to one of her sisters, hoping the support would help.IN THE SUMMER before he started at his brand new school in derry, eddie experiences what becomes one of his earliest memories. while sonia is busy at a drugstore not too far from their home, five-year-old eddie gets distracted by a shoe sizing station inside the store. curious, he wanders over and climbs on top of the contraption — but when sonia sees, she screams, startling him so bad he almost falls off the machine. she scolds him for playing on it, telling him “those machines give you cancer!”THIS WAS JUST the first sign of sonia’s illness.ON SPETEMBER 21, 1982, eddie is in kindergarten when sonia comes to the school and picks him up early for a dentist appointment. unfortunately, she arrives during recess, and when eddie arrives at the front office sweaty and out-of-breath from playing tag with his new friend bill, sonia has another breakdown.INSTEAD OF TAKING him to the dentist that day, she takes him straight to the pediatrician and convinces both the doctor and eddie that he’s suffering from severe asthma and requires the use of an inhaler.HE’S HAD AN inhaler ever since.SONIA DOES A thorough job of convincing eddie he’s fragile. by the time he’s thirteen, fragility and the fanny pack of meds he keeps on his waist at all times, are his defining characteristics.WHEN BILL’S LITTLE brother, georgie denbrough, goes missing in october 1988, sonia keeps eddie inside for the rest of the fall and winter.SCHOOL STARTS BACK up after christmas break, and sonia eases her leash on eddie bit by bit — until betty ripsom goes missing in may.EDDIE SUFFERS UNDER lock and key for the majority of his eighth-grade year, but by the time summer rolls around, there isn’t much she can do to keep him from going outside.SO LONG AS he stays with his friends, she allows it. (never-mind that she doesn’t think much of that richie tozier or that stanley uris!)THE FIRST ENCOUNTER eddie has with IT is outside the old abandoned house on neibolt street. he’s just there to scour the old, rusting tracks where trains used to power through derry when he’s accosted by a leper who offers to give eddie a blowjob.

IT SHOULD NOT be up to seven thirteen-year-olds to protect their hometown from a psychotic cosmic force — fear incarnated. but in the summer of 1989, that’s exactly what eddie and his ragtag band of friends (the losers’ club) do.THE FIGHT ISN’T without its casualties. when eddie falls two stories and through a wooden table, his forearm fractures. when sonia finds out, the friend group fractures.THE LOSERS SPEND july apart, but when beverly goes missing in august, bill rounds the losers up — and they go to neibolt street.THE SHOWDOWN ISN’T pretty by any stretch of the imagination. henry bowers almost shoots mike in the head; IT isolates and almost kills stan; beverly almost gets lost in the deadlights.BUT THEY BEAT IT. they hit it, bite it, scratch it, kick it, it until it disappears back into the sewers where it came from.THAT SHOULD HAVE been the end of it.THAT SHOULD HAVE been enough trauma for a lifetime.BUT.BILL DENBROUGH IS a natural-born leader, and eddie would follow him to the ends of the earth. (he’d already followed him straight into hell!) so when bill asks the losers to promise they’ll come back to derry and kill IT if IT ever comes back . . . eddie can’t say no.BILL CARVES A canyon into eddie’s palm with a broken coke bottle, and they all make a blood oath.AFTER THAT SUMMER, things start to get fuzzy. the losers enter high school with no pomp or circumstance. beverly moves to portland to live with her aunt. one by one, the losers start leaking their way out of town, and eddie lets them go. it’s like baby teeth: losing parts of him he thought he needed. and he forgets all about them.HE GETS HIS driver’s license. sonia no longer makes much of an effort to get out of the house by the time eddie is sixteen, so he becomes an errand boy. he’s almost seventeen when he has his first kiss. it’s on heather hart’s doorstep after junior prom, and he doesn’t get what all the fuss is about. when he calls richie to tell him about it, richie doesn’t seem too interested in the details.NEITHER OF THEM realize it’s the last time they’ll talk to each other for twenty-four years.EDDIE TAKES HEATHER to junior prom, senior homecoming, and senior prom. it takes until senior prom for her to convince him to go beyond just making out in the backseat of sonia’s car, and it doesn’t go well. eddie escapes through heather’s window because it’s less humiliating to pretend he just took mr. hart’s daughter’s virginity than it is to admit he couldn’t even get it up.HE GRADUATES, ALONG with the only other three remaining members of the loser’s club — stanley, ben, and mike — in 1994. he got into nyu back in february, and he plans on taking off as soon as he tosses his graduation cap. it’s the first time in his life he’ll be away from home; he’s never been more excited for anything in his life.SONIA ISN’T GOING to let him go that easily. when he gets home from grad night, she informs him the house has sold and she will be moving to new york with him.WHAT CAN HE do about it? she relies on him just as much as she forced him to rely on her for the entirety of his childhood.

THE KASPBRAKS MOVE to queens in july of ’94, and eddie starts studying psychology at nyu in august. it takes single semester for eddie to get fed up — with sonia, with queens, with the hour-long commute into manhattan for his fifty-minute classes. after christmas break, he moves to the village, and sonia blames him for her ever-worsening condition every time she gets him on the phone.A MAN KISSES eddie outside a bar in the village that february, and things start clicking into a place. he’s not gay — he just really likes kissing and touching guys. he likes how solid and flat they are compared to how soft and squishy women are. he spends four and a half years lying to himself, and by the time he graduates in 1999, has made out with countless men, a few women, and started relationships with exactly zero of either.HE STARTS WORKING on cars. he’s always had an interest in motors — trains, planes, cars, it doesn’t matter — and it doesn’t take very long for him to start a garage of his own. one garage grows into two, which grows into ten, which grows into a franchise that, by the time he meets myra atkinson in 2005, he’s owns a successful chain of garages all over the northeast.MYRA IS SWEET. she’s bigger, but kind and worries about him a lot. she makes sure his inhaler is always full and keeps him on his medication schedule. so if they have sex once the entire time they’re dating and it’s a very one-sided affair, that’s fine. they still fit.THEY FIT WELL enough, in fact, that eddie asks myra to marry him in 2010, and in april 2011, eddie and myra kaspbrak get married on long island. it’s marriage bliss, sure. or it’s at least as blissful as eddie remembers childhood being. it’s safe.WHEN SONIA KASPBRAK dies of liver cancer in 2012, myra takes it so much harder than eddie does, despite never getting along with her mother-in-law. she plans the funeral and forbids eddie from going anywhere near the open casket, for fear he’ll catch something nasty from the formaldehyde.LIFE GOES ON.EDDIE AND MYRA both want children, but no matter how hard they try, it doesn’t happen. the doctor says despite myra’s very slightly-advanced age, there’s no reason they’re having such a hard time. they try a lot of different solutions: artificial insemination, fertility treatments, surrogacy. nothing ever works.. by their three-year anniversary, myra’s parents have stopped asking for grandchildren, and the kaspbraks have stopped having sex altogether.MYRA ACCUSES EDDIE of not loving her, and eddie denies it but wonders if she’s right. he couldn’t even use the porn the hospital gave him to jerk off to when they tried artificial insemination; he had to use the gay stuff he found on the internet instead. so maybe she’s right, but he doesn’t know where that came from. it isn’t like he’s ever even kissed a guy before.WHEN HE RECEIVES a call from a derry, maine number, he and myra are in the middle of a rather amicable divorce. it turns out, if your spouse doesn’t love you, there’s no real reason to shackle them to your bed. it doesn’t matter if myra keeps his inhaler filled; eddie finds it’s easier to breathe when she isn’t around at all.IT ISN’T EASY to breathe, however, when mike hanlon asks him, like a ghost from a past he’s long-since forgotten, tells him IT’S BACK. he doesn't know what it means except that he’s scared; and he knows it’s time for him to go back home. he flies to maine that night.

MILES WAS BORN in 1992 in boston to robert and angela upshur.  robert taught english at harvard university while angela taught biological engineering at mit.  miles lived around the corner from his paternal grandparents in an affluent boston neighborhood called brookline, and up until middle school, he had a normal upbringing.HE HAD HIS own room growing up, and though he and his brothers fought incessantly, they also spent a lot of time playing together.  as a child, miles loved the outdoors, riding his bike, putting on talent shows for the neighbors and their kids, and talking to people, but there wasn’t anything he loved more than writing.  from the time he was old enough to hold a pencil in his chubby little kid hand, he would scribble on whatever scrap of paper he could find.  (and if he couldn’t find one, he would, much to his mother’s dismay, use the walls, furniture, toys, etc.) as a kindergartener, he would use a wooden spoon and one of his father’s many tweed jackets to pretend to be a news anchor and give the daily news and weather to whoever would listen.  he wrote his first short story when he was in fifth grade; his first novel when he was in eighth.SO IT CAME as no surprise when miles decided to major in english once he got to harvard, and it was even less of a surprise when he pursued a career in journalism after finishing his degree in just two years.

AFTER THE SUDDEN of his fiancé sebastian at age 20, miles had nothing to keep him in boston.  so he traveled the country pursuing stories that caught his attention.  he visited new york, chicago, dallas, los angeles, las vegas, miami, and more, but fell in love with washington, d.c., and as soon as he could, he moved from boston to d.c.ONCE SETTLED, MILES easily landed a swanky job as a journalist with a well-known news agency — but it didn’t last long.  miles is very outspoken and has always had a hard time keeping his mouth shut when he disagrees with something. after writing material on the situation in afghanistan that his employer deemed unacceptable, miles was fired from his job.  since then, he’s been self-employed as a freelancer / investigative journalist.LESS THAN A week into self-employment, miles stumbled upon a story he didn’t realize would change his life as comprehensively as it did.  when a collection of apartment buildings all got bought up by an ominous company, he decided to take it upon himself to silence questions across the city by sneaking in and interviewing the first person he found.  later, he’d argue whether or not finding jax huttner there first was a coincidence or not.JUST MONTHS INTO his intense relationship with jax, miles received an email from an

unknown source begging him to expose the sinister nature of murkoff psychiatric systems’ activities in colorado’s mount massive asylum.  miles took the opportunity for a potentially huge story, and a few days later, drove up to the asylum gates.INSIDE, MILES GOT much, much more than he bargained for.  he was chased, terrorized, injured, tortured, and psychologically abused by variants, former murkoff employees, and more for hours on end before he finally made his way down into the basement to find murkoff’s labs in all their gory, inhumane truth.  this is also where he met the walrider.  after completing his task to kill the walrider’s host, billy hope, miles was savagely attacked by the walrider.  when it was over, he finally hauled his bruised, battered, and broken body towards the exit.LIFE AFTER MOUNT massive was, by no means, easy.  his mental health deteriorated at an alarming rate; he threw out his laptop, smashed his phone, got in his jeep and just started driving.  he wanted to go somewhere no one knew his name, and he found it — in hope county, montana.MISGUIDED AND DESPERATE for a solution to the nightmares that plagued him, guilt-stricken and starving for purpose, miles was the perfect prey for the project at eden’s gate.

JOHANN DOMINIKUS BRUNSMEIER is born as cedrick’s twin, and their endless pranks make their parents’ lives a living hell.  hell runs in the blood; you inherit the scars your ancestors passed down.  brunsmeiers aren’t just resilient; they’re stronger than steel, impassable as granite.  some of them lived through wars, through life in the wehrmacht & the luftwaffe, and you, dominic, had it so easy before.  your step-grandfather created the third most popular brewery in berlin, the brewery that gave your father his livelihood.  if you and your brother had wanted to go to college, you could have afforded it!  but instead, they both decide to enter the bundesgrenzschutz, and it sets their lives on a path from which they do not recover.HE SPENDS ONE year with border control and gets far too accustomed to following orders and filing paperwork for his comfort zone.  his father tells him it’s all part of the process (growing pains!) dominic and cedrick still blow off steam by pulling harmless pranks on coworkers.  they spend ten years with the bgs; they are two of the best cops the bgs has ever seen.  their futures are bright, or so say their higher-ups.

AFTER A YEAR in the bgs, a joint task force aimed to quell the growing threat of the red army faction (raf) recruits dominic into their ranks.  it’s not easy for him to leave cedrick behind, but he thinks he can do it, at least for a little bit.  cedrick is close to marrying the girl of his dreams, and for the first time, dominic figures it’s time to give cedrick a little space.  a few years later, when cedrick has a wife and two little boys to call his own, it feels like this is how life will always be.  little do they know ———CEDRICK DIES AT twenty-eight in a freak car accident caused by a faulty car battery.  it happens days before the new year; the GSG-9 recruits dominic a month later to get away from their side-by-side lockers.  (you carry your ancestor’s scars with you; rudi brunsmeier died on the beaches of normandy in 1944, and his twin brother, werner, came home ALONE!)AFTER FOUR YEARS with the gsg-9, they entrust him to a six-month undercover operation with hannover’s chapter of hells angels.  six months turns into nine.  nine months turns into eighteen.  eighteen months turns into four years.

FRIEDRICH MARIUS STREICHER is born to benjamin and juna streicher, who do not love him. where they go is a mystery to this day.  marius doesn’t know his father’s voice, nor does he know his mother’s face.  benjamin’s brother, jakob, takes him in.  he is a mechanic for what later becomes the bundespolizei aviation group and what he lacks in parenting techniques, he makes up for by teaching marius everything there is to know about helicopters.  flying becomes marius’s number one love.  after gymnasium, he joins the bundespolizei as a helicopter technician so he can spend his days in the sky.

MARIUS IS A genius, but it comes at a cost. it isn’t always easy for him to read social cues; his arrogance is always getting him in trouble.  higher-ups know him as abrasive.  it’s not the only warning they give his coworkers, but it’s at the top of his psychological profile that the bpol passes to the gsg-9 when a little invention of his catches their eye.  it’s called an active defense system (magpie), and while he did not come up with the original technology on his own (they said it was designed for tanks!)  he did the impossible and designed a smaller, more accurate ground-based system to stop grenades.  (they said it could not be done!)

TEN YEARS WITH the gsg-9 bolsters marius’s résumé; the unfortunate side effect is that it also bolsters his ego.  two items on his résumé impress team rainbow the most: his involvement in the gsg-9 anti-piracy ops in the indian ocean, and of course, his beloved magpie.  but with rainbow, he finds a new codename (jäger) as well as something he’s never had before: a family.  for the first time in his life, he feels like he belongs somewhere.
